According to esteemed Masonic historian Reinhard Markner of the University of Innsbruck, Austria, they may have been less subversive than many people believe. Extensive research has led him to believe that the conspiratorial narrative surrounding the Illuminati Order may date back to as early as 1785 - and may be without merit.
