Together we make a profound difference

Standing Together for Equality

Equality on all levels – including social, economic, cultural, religious, and racial – is a foundational tenet of Freemasonry. That’s why on January 18, members and leaders from the Grand Lodge of California and Most Worshipful Prince Hall Grand Lodge of California marched together in communities statewide to help celebrate the enduring legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

California Grand Master M. David Perry marched in the Kingdom Day Parade in Los Angeles at the invitation of Most Worshipful Donald M. Ware, M.D. of Prince Hall.

“We joined together to Honor Martin Luther King, not as California Masons and Prince Hall Masons, but as Masons,” Perry says. “While his life was cut far too short, the lessons that he taught live on, and his legacy of diversity, awareness and equality, service and love still inspire us today.”

This sentiment was echoed by Master Vance Spencer of Tehama Lodge No. 3 who, along with Tehama Lodge Senior Deacon Richard Terk, joined brothers of the David D. Mattock Prince Hall Lodge and other local Prince Hall lodges to march in Sacramento's Martin Luther King Day Parade. "Our theme for the day was 'Joining Together in Unity,'" says Spencer.

Members of both California lodges found that their participation in the events was a meaningful way to connect with brothers in Prince Hall and to share the Masonic philosophy of equality with their surrounding communities.

“The parade theme for this year in Los Angeles was ‘Our Work Is Not Yet Done,’” says Perry. “Our work as Masons is not done yet either. It is time for us to come together to rise and build our fraternity – our world desperately needs us.”
