Together we make a profound difference

Charitable Bargain Sales

A charitable bargain sale allows you to sell property to the Masons of California for less than the property's fair market value. The amount of fair market value over the sale price is your charitable contribution, or gift portion.* Almost any type of asset may be sold in a charitable bargain sale, depending on cash available for purchase and the suitability of the asset.

Advantages:

  • The charitable contribution portion qualifies for income tax deduction.*
  • It may be carried forward for five years if not fully usable in the same year the gift is made.
  • It allows you to receive some proceeds from cash sales while making a charitable gift.
  • A bargain sale may reduce capital gains tax liability on highly appreciated property.

* Please note that your charitable tax deduction may be reduced by allocation of tax basis and reduction rules relating to unrealized gain.
